The map is taken from a Greek irredentist site (enotitanpride.tripod.com/ellada), which claims all these territories as "Greek". The site, among other things, calls for war to "reunite" Macedonian southern provinces with Greece.
While the Greek government keeps talking about the "expansionist propaganda of Macedonia against Greece", no one bothers to discuss the way Greece threats territorial matters. The map, printed in 2000 by the Parliament, has a legend saying "The Unification of Greece".
In purple are marked the territories which “united” with the Greek state in 1920 and below, the Treaty of Sevres is mentioned, which partly satisfied the needs of the Greek “Great Idea” (Megali Idea). The very mention of “unification” serves to highlight the “unity” and “indivisibility” of Greek lands, which include the marked purple territories.
Of course the nationalists and crypto-nationalists in Greece can justify themselves by claiming that the map is not expansionist, but rather represents the real situation on the ground following the Treaty of Sevres in 1920. Well, a similar argumentation can be used by every Macedonian nationalist claiming the same for the Treaty of Bucharest of 1913 in which the well-known map with the division of the Macedonian lands between three states is not expansionist propaganda but rather represents the realistic situation at the actual time. So in actual fact, what is the difference between the title “Historical Map of Greece” (1920) from the title “Historical Map of Macedonia” (1913). Or what is the difference between a title that reads “The Division of Macedonia” and one that states “The Unification of Greece”?The ‘wonder’ of the above mentioned map is that it ‘decorates’ a large number of administrative buildings in Greece such as municipal offices, police stations and even Greek embassies abroad, which indirectly serves as propaganda in the service of the policy of “Megali Idea” (the doctrine of a greater Greece from the last century which advocates the idea of a Greece spread over two continents and surrounded by three seas). Similarly, it propagates the Greek character of Cyprus as well as the Greek character of southern Albania. The map even goes as far as to use the Greek terms “Monastirio” and “Stromnitsa” for Bitola and Strumica respectively which are in the territory of the Republic of Macedonia, while all toponyms in southern Albania (which by the way is called “Northern Epirus”) are exclusively in Greek.
When such a map is issued on the initiative of the Greek Parliament and under the supervision of the Geographic Military Service and which to this day is continually being distributed by the highest organ of the state, that is the Parliament, how then will Greek diplomacy convince interlocutors from all places that “it is concerned with the stability of the region” and that “the expansionist ideologies of its neighbours (referring here to the Republic of Macedonia) are not contributing towards achieving this”?
Taken generally, when we speak of the Macedonian question in recent times, Greek diplomacy has lingered around the arguments surrounding the “cultural inheritance of Greece”, “the theft of the name ‘Macedonia’ by Skopje” and other similar unserious arguments, which by the way, are met with ironic laughs by foreign interlocutors. Today, Greek diplomacy attempts to turn the question towards the so-called “expansionism of Skopje”. History, in recent time, has been left to politicians of the likes of Karazaferis and the extremely nationalist Greek Orthodox Church whose arguments are attractive to the ears of the domestic public.
Therefore, until such time that an ideological reform in Greece takes place in relation to formation of the so-called “Greek myth” that the Greeks are the ‘chosen people’ who are also direct descendants of the Ancient Hellenes; that this link continues through the centuries and that “holy” national interests exist; until such time that the conspiracy theory on the “foreign factor” is not reformed, Greek society will continue to be in a position of ‘imprisonment’ and ‘intellectually closed-minded’ to understand reality, while Greek politics will continue to be a victim of the likes of Kofos, Mertsos, Samaras and Papathemelis, while receiving slaps in the face and paying a high diplomatic price on issues of the so-called “national interest”.

Well as a Macedonian do you speak Macedonian 'greek', Albanian or some slavic tongue? If you speak some form of Greek then surely you are Greek?.
The Belarusian's took the chance to create a 'nation' in the 1990's, but they speak 'russian' and have never been an independent state. Eventually they will go back to Russia again.
I know that under Alexander and his father 'macedonia' was a state super power but surely 2,500 yrs ago is a bit of a wait to revive the idea again?
I would have thought that the idea of some sort of 'Enosis' (Eνωσις) with Greece would have held some attractions?
EU membership
Racial guarantees
Border integrity (with Albanian seperatists, Kosovo and Albania firmly out of the picture).
Linguistic ties
larger country and job opportunities?
Still you may be right, the EU does seem to attract much smaller units.
To what point can one distort reality and still sound intellectually smart? A perfect exemplar to study. Not all one reads in blogs and the internet is true. Nothing of the above propaganda is true.
The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia applied to become an official EU candidate on March 22, 2004. On November 9, 2005 the European Commission recommended that it become a candidate state. EU leaders agreed to this recommendation on December 17, formally naming the country as an official candidate, but no date for starting negotiations has been announced yet.
The country has a dispute with its southern neighbor and current EU member, Greece, over the name Macedonia, the EU recognizes the country as the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and this is the only denotation by which the country may hold negotiations with the EU. Resolution of this issue is technically not a precondition for membership but Greece and Cyprus have repeatedly stated that they will veto the country's accession unless an agreement on the naming issue is reached.
Membership negotiations should start (if greece and cyprus not use the veto) on 2008 and should end on 2012.
EU joining date should be on 2015 if of course this country exists till then.
There are 33 acquis chapters that a candidate must fullfill. FYROM needs considerable efforts to adopt 13 chapters
(public procurement, company law, information society and media, agriculture, food safety, transport policy, energy, taxation, social policy & employment, regional policy, judiciary & human rights, justice-freedom-security, customs union)
It is very hard to adopt 4 chapters (free movement of goods, intellectual property law, competition policy, financial control) and the situation is totally incompatible with EU Acquis in 1 chapter (environment).
Why this THIRD WORLD COUNTRY is supported so much by USA and UK? Isn’t it obvious that this country has NO RELATION with Alexander the Great and ancient Macedonia? Everyone can visit the Vergina area near Salonica (in Macedonia which is an area inside Greece at north) where Mr Andronikos (a famous Greek archaeologist) discovered the tomb of Philippos the II the famous King of Ancient Macedonia father of Alexander the Great. All the epigraphs found there were written in the Greek Language and NOT IN THE SO CALLED MACEDONIAN LANGUAGE.
Furthemore is n’t obvious that the so called MACEDONIAN language is so similar with the BULGARIAN language? The FYROMIANS understand the BULGARIANS but they use for Nationalistic reasons a translator to translate the Bulgarian Language to Fyromian language. ITS REAL REDICOULOUS. Fyromians are a Slav race that they come to the region at 700 after chr., thus approx. 1000 years after the birth of Alexander the Great.
So to the point, the USA support FYROM because they want to create a protectorate in the heart of the Balkans so to destabilize the region, create problems in the EU (see new Europe countries, Turkey’s accession talks and UK) and stop the Russia’s expansion in this region. They don’t care about the sensitivities of greeks. History told us that Anlgo-saxons are people without honor.
Mr goodbytes
mr Matheew Neemitz on 5-12-07 announced that Skopje brought a proposal for a trilateral meeting (Skopje-Greece-UN) first in Skopje and then in Athens to discuss the name issue, to intensify the negotiations and find a final solution. You see you BLOODY FOOL that YOU DO CARE for a greek veto for your access into EU and NATO. The time is pressing you and final you WILL DO change your constitutional name YOU IMPOSTORS.
Have a nice day and you have to relax a little bit.
"Does your country have territorial claims because of these official maps ("Greater Greece" hangs on many public walls), printed by your Parliament in 2000? Or maybe they are historical references?"
It is a frigging historical map of Greece before the destruction of Smyrna by turks, with the various territories gained by Greece till that point in different color by chronological order. It writes it pretty clear on the map. ΙΣΤΟΡΙΚΟΣ ΧΑΡΤΗΣ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΟΣ. Enough is enough Goodbytes, if you want to blame Greece at least try to check your sources. I am really pissed right now and i would probably threw a lot of insults, but i know you are a coward and would delete the comment. I actually DEMAND to change that article right now as it is a blatant misinformed lie and it insults me and my country. Or all your claims about friendship are nothing but BLATANT LIES AS WELL. As for the so called "Macedonian" nation map that you post, give me proof that such a nation WITH THE BORDERS YOU PUT ACTUALLY EXISTED FOR EVEN A FRIGGING DAY IN MODERN HISTORY!!!
AMAN PIA..
If you are a Macedonian, then the first thing you have to define is what nationality of Macedonian you are. Ethnically saying you are a Macedonian is as defining as saying you are a Californian. Ok, now you must tell me, are you a Mexican Californian, or an "Anglo" Californian, or a Afroamerican Californian. Are your from Baja California in Mexico, or from the US California? California is a Gerographic term, not a national term, as is Macedonia.
You claim your country's name is "Republic of Macedonia". yes and no...this is your temporary name, as recognized temporarily by many nations, but the UN, the EU, NATO, Greece, France, etc recognize your country as FYROM. This is also a temporary name. The final name will have to be finally accepted by your neighbors, since your current name implies territorial claims on Bulgaria and Greece.
You say that it is a basic human right to choose a name for yourself and to express your nationality.
yes and no...you have no right to call your country France or that will offend the French, and you have no right to call yourselves Mcedonians or that will offend the Greek Macedonians (like myself). If you make a products and try to market it under a famous product already in the market, the company that has had it first will sue you and force you to pull your misnamed product out of the market! it is not your human right to claim a national name that is inclusive of many other nationalities and try to claim it as exclusively your own! Do not try to pretend you are the victim here when you are the malicious perpetrator of historic fraud and blatant irredentism against the land of others! You ask that we please respect your demand to the exclusivity of the name of Macedonia and you ask that I call you by your name. If that is the case, I agree, and I Say: you are a Slavomacedonian and you live in Slavomacedonia!
You are no more a Macedonian than I am, so stop insulting me. I am a Greek Macedonian and you are a Slav Macedonian, and there are Albanian Macedonians and Bulgarian Macedonians and Vlach Macedonians. You cannot say I am no Macedonian! I have as much right (if not more, because of my older history on this land), as you do to be called a Macedonian.
As for expressing your nationality, as long as you do not try to claim my history and Alexandros and Philippos and Aristoteles, all the historic people whose names you have no idea what they mean, and whose coins or marble stelae you cannot even read but knowing Greek I do, and as long as you stop provoking you neighbors by naming your airports with other people's heroes and do not engage in hating tactics like defacing the Greek flag with nazi swastigas all over your your provincial balkan capital before the NATO meeting in Bucuresti, then maybe things can be betetr and you can express your nationality in a different, more European and civilized way.
So try a different, more correctly defining national name and you will be surprised by the acceptance your neighbors will surround you with.
Miltiades, there are 2 things I need to tell you right now:
1. Mention a name that I find insulting again, and I will delete your comment.
2. I will leave this comment of yours so that others can see what kind of hysteric malicious nationalist you are. It is people like you that are bringing misery to the world and I hope you'll extinct eventually. The "best" part is that you don't really understand a single word I am saying.
We are not changing our name for you or anybody. We don't need "acceptance" from people like you. Now go back to your buddies and be proud of your history.
