Blackmailers as neighbors

It is hard to have a good neighborly relations with neighbors that openly work against you. Macedonia's neighbors think they can blackmail Macedonia to do things we otherwise wouldn't, just because they are currently in a better position than us (or, "have a say") in the alliances of which we are trying to become a member. My country is willing to make compromises in order to help the Balkan stabilize once for all, but there are some "compromises" that Macedonia cannot do - like for example destroy itself.

Bulgaria

Bulgaria's prime minister Georgi ParvanovBulgaria's prime minister Georgi Parvanov threats that Macedonia has to "give up" (whatever that means) the entire Bulgarian history, if it wants to count on Bulgaria's support to join the European Union. I will remind here that for years our academics and politicians are offering to form joint teams of scientists that will produce a common history of the Balkans, in a hope that this will settle a lot of irrational disputes, all sparked by events that happened centuries ago.

This is in the spirit of the good neighborly relations and also follows the EU recommended pattern of resolving such disputes or contradictions. We also wish that Bulgaria stops suppressing the human rights of Macedonians and allows the party OMO Ilinden - Pirin to register and operate. This is also a ruling made by the European Court of Human Rights, which Bulgaria ignores so far (Bulgaria does not recognize the existence of the Macedonian nation, language, culture, history, etc - they think we are Bulgarians).

Greece

On the other hand, Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis claims that Macedonia has to resolve the name dispute with Greece, in a way that it pleases both sides (considering that the name dispute is unilateral issue, it translates to "please the Greek side only"), before it can join NATO. The same request is reiterated by the Greek negotiator Adamantios Vasilakis:

The Greek Government made a giant step from the position in had in the past. We hope that your leaders will take that into consideration, carefully and positively, because this is not a bilateral issue, it is an issue of security and peaceful coexistence in the region.

However, although the name dispute is part of the "good neighborhood ambient", resolving it BEFORE joining any treaty or organization was NEVER a part of the interim agreement between Macedonia and Greece. As a matter of fact, Macedonia agreed to be accepted in the United Nations under the provisional reference "the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia" if Greece does not interfere or block our association in NATO or EU. In other words, by blocking Macedonia's NATO membership, Greece will break the agreement in the United Nations - which makes the entire dispute no longer relevant.

Actually, the VERY reason why Macedonia agreed with this burden of using a temporary reference - which is humiliating for us, is that it is not blocked when the time comes to join NATO and EU. In the same line are the reactions from London and Washington that Greece must not insist on a resolution of the name dispute with any deadline, including Macedonia's NATO or EU membership.

Despite all the above, the Greek Foreign Minister Bakoyannis insists on a quick resolution of the dispute and offers Macedonia to accept the Greek's proposition of a so-called "complex" or "composite" name formula. This is like changing the rules in the middle of the game.

You will join NATO once you fulfill the terms of good neighborly relations and this means finding a composite name.

Dora Bakoyannis, composite name

That is exactly what the "argument of force" politics means, and that is what Greece is doing all the time. Our message to this "new rule" and the "name formula" that Greece has invented for us Macedonians is that the only name Greece can play with, invent or compose is their own. Our name is not for trade and we won't change it, ever.

Well, you can offend as much as you want, but it all makes sense if you consider that Macedonia is fighting for independence these past 1-2 centuries and that our territory was occupied by foreign countries.

For example, do you consider the events that took place in your town/city let's say, 100 years ago as YOUR history, or OTTOMAN history?

Do you consider the time when your city was under Roman rule to be ROMAN or YOUR history?

Or to be more specific: if my grand-grand father wrote a folk song 70-80 years ago, was it a Bulgarian folk song because his village was guarded by 2 Bulgarian soldiers, or a Macedonian folk song, considering that he thought of himself as Macedonian, and his country as Macedonia (although occupied)?

interesting answer for someone who will see this and has no knowledge of History . The fact is that you did not have ANY relation as a nation with the name Macedonia until some decades . Thats the point you just woke up some morning and claimed to be macedonias ! BUT the thing is that you are seeing the coin just from one side ! ok that what you say is Correct ! i agree and if its correct the fact that YOU are living in the Area where ANCIENT MAKEDONIA WAS as you claim is not makeing you MACEDONIAS ! you are saying that 2 soldiers dont make the village bulgarian ! in that point of View YOU can claim yourself ROMAN or ITALIAN because the Roman Empire was at your area too ! People at IRAQ can claim theirselfs as MAKEDONIANS TOO ! or not ? Makedonia did reach there you know ! so my dear friend ALL your Arguments are collapsing in front of your eyes just by that ! Our nation Haritage is not lost in any way in the pass of time not even when the ottomans was capturing are homes and did not allow us to speak Greek ! they did not allow us to believe at god ,
BUT we my friend did not loose our language the same language that Makedonians had , we did not loose our NAMES the same names our ancestor had ! thats the fact ! the ancient Makedonian Tembles and Tombs are having Scribtures in Greek ! NOT SLAVIC ! you are claiming Officially and not you personaly that you have tha right to call yourselfs makedonians because you are living in that area ! but i just proved to you that you cannot based on your own sayings . Tell me are you claiming to be part of the ancient makedonians ? and if so how can you prove it ?
